GLOBE II -
The Impact of IT on European Industry
In order to facilitate
the evaluation of Information Technology Impact the project
provides the "Constructive Evaluation" method, as well as
a database with case reports, and six (6) extended case
reports. The Globe-II project has produced the following
results: (a) Developed a detailed IT evaluation method,
termed "Constructive Evaluation". This method can be used
to make a quantitative assessment of any IT system in any
context. (b) Constructed and populated a database of more
than 300 case reports of organisations gaining real business
benefits from IT. The database includes cases from many
countries and many different sectors of industry and commerce.
Each case includes hard measures of the benefits that were
obtained. (c) Prepared extended reports on six selected
cases. While the case reports in the database are necessarily
concise, these extended reports provide a fuller explanation
on the precise means by which business benefits were achieved.
IDA-DSIS -
Support the Introduction of Electronic Transfer of Statistical
Data
The objective of this
project is to support and assist DSIS organisations and
end-users in the introduction of electronic communications
for the exchange of statistical data. This will be achieved
by determining the current statistical data transfer situation
and, for a number of data flows that are not currently well
supported by electronically data transfer, to assess the
requirements, recommend an implementation plan for improvements
and support the introduction of electronic transfer of statistical
data.

Main strengths and weaknesses of Greece in regards to the
transition to Information Society
The objective of the
project is to investigate the main strengths and weaknesses
of Greece in regards to the transition to an Information
based Society. The study has been elaborated on behalf of
the European Commission, to assess the situation in Greece
related to the Information Infrastructure. The topics examined
include: - networks: information appliances, applications,
human resources, interconnected, interoperable telecommunications,
- information appliances: computers, televisions, fax machines,
telephones, etc. - applications: software, information services,
and information databases and - human resources: trained
people who can build, maintain, and operate these systems.
INTELDOC -
Intelligent Document Creator
The project builds
on the results of the ESPRIT project SUPERDOC. It aims at
the creation of a unique distributed system, for the creation
and communication of documents that have a formal structure
and their content depends on the value of certain variable
parts. The consortium includes Greek IT companies as well
as Greek and Swedish pilot users.
ISMES -
Integrating SME Supply chains (A Pilot Project in the Automotive
Sector)
ISMES is a pilot project,
which will re-engineer the way in which SMEs in the automotive
sector manage their subcontractors’ networks, through a
tighter integration of the actors in the supply chain. ISMES
is implementing EDI in a new area of the automotive industry.
It integrates existing hardware and software wherever possible,
and develops software for the security system and the rescheduling.
It deals with information transfer, sales, some aspects
of distribution, payment, pre- and post-sales support, and
the definition and management of co-operative processes.
ISMES includes two SME end-users who have an existing trade
relationship: a first level contractor (OMR); and a second-level
subcontractor (FMB). Two IT companies are involved: BMT
(working on executive information systems and scheduling),
and ARCHIMEDIA (communications and data acquisition).
IUN2 - Inter-University
Network for OMI Technology
The IUN2 project has
one primary global objective, to disseminate the OMI technologies
through the Universities all over the world. The objectives
are: - to operate the IUN established in the OMIDIS project,
- to extend the network to non-EU European Countries as
well as to the rest of the world, - to promote the use and
fast dissemination of technologies emerging from the OMI
initiative.

MAREXPO -
Information Dissemination on Maritime Industry related ICT
Projects
MAREXPO is committed
to the dissemination of maritime RTD results and to the
building of the Maritime Information Society. It will improve
awareness of ICT and its potential to improve the industry's
competitiveness in different maritime business processes.
MAREXPO supports the Commission's RTD programs and stimulates
the rapid take-up and implementation of EC-RTD results in
industry, particularly by SMEs. The MAREXPO consortium,
consisting of leading companies from the most relevant sectors
in maritime industry with significant experience from more
than 30 successful European research projects, will perform
four working-modules. One module for overall technical guidance
including general PR activities and a second module for
the preparation of showpieces (handouts, multi-media presentations,
physical demonstrators. As a third module a set of fairs
and conferences will be participated to present the prepared
showpieces. An interface offers co-operation and show-materials
to complementary dissemination activities. As a final module
MAREXPO culminates in a dissemination activity at EXPO '
98 with the motto The Oceans, Heritage of the Future.

The project aims to
create a Multimedia Support Centre, based on a network among
four (4) Mediterranean regions, dedicated to foster the
development of European multimedia applications with particular
regards to the area of Culture and Arts.

METAFORA -
A Major European Testing of Actual Freight Operations Using
RTI on an Axis
The project’s primary
objective has been the combination of satellite based Mobile
Data Communications and EDI for combined road transport
operations. The project includes numerous pilot installations
and has achieved successful results. ARCHIMEDIA S.A. has
undertaken the work-package related to the design and specification
of an integrated data network, to connect a large number
of Greek ports and to be accessible by transportation and
maritime companies, so that these can benefit from modern
telematics technology in order to enhance the combined-transport
related communication procedures.
NAUTILOS -
Improvement of Safety and Quality in the Maritime Industry
The objective of this
project is the effective use of advanced management theories
and of the software MultiFlow for the improvement of safety
and quality of the operations performed in the Maritime
Industry according to the requirements of ISO-9000 and ISM
Code. The project also aims at the implementation of business
process modelling and redesign as well as office automation
technologies will aim European Shipping Companies to comply
with IMO safety and Quality standards.
PRINIDIS -
Technology for Business Processes Dissemination
The aim of this action
is to promote dissemination activities in all member states
on "Technology for Business Processes". TBP is an accompanying
measure of the ESPRIT programme aiming at supporting the
European Enterprises to compete effectively in global market
through the facilitation of business best practice pilots,
systems integration projects and dissemination actions.
ARCHIMEDIA is responsible to implement relevant activities
in Greece, Spain and Portugal. It has also the mission to
establish contacts with countries of Central and Eastern
Europe. Five European consulting companies including TODITEC,
FIF, ETHNOTEAM and BRAINSTORM carry it out.
Rapport -
Rapid Prototyping of Object Oriented Production Planning and
Control Systems
The objective of the
project is to provide a set of tools and a methodology to
support the implementation of Production Planning and Control
System (PPC) for industrial SMEs of Central and East European
Countries. The system will enable CIME designers to develop
quickly, model and prototype applications based on specific
needs of the manufacturing enterprise. The consortium includes
Research Institute for Informatics (Romania), UTAL SA (Romania)
and Joseph Stefan Institute (Slovenia). ARCHIMEDIA has undertaken
the overall project management as well as consulting in
regards to production methodology. The project will develop
a prototype of the tool-set and evaluate it through pilot
applications. The applications may act as simulation tools
or serve as a basis for developing a final solution or selecting
and adapting existing software. The tool set will consist
of a requirement workbench enabling the designer to formally
describe the production system and generate PPC/DSS requirements,
a knowledge based configurator module assisting the derivation
of the final model and a prototype generator. The tools
will allow the formal description of PPC requirements, the
derivation of Object-Oriented Models of production systems
and the rapid prototyping of the PPC applications through
the configuration of a generic application. The process
will be assisted by a knowledge base capable of adapting
a generic object-oriented model of PPC Systems to specific
user needs.
RECITE -
Refinement of Constructive IT Evaluation
The RECITE project
aims to further test the Constructive IT Evaluation method
developed during Globe II project. This testing will be
by means of case studies at five (5) different organisations
who wish to evaluate either an existing IT system or one
that is to be purchased or developed. Working closely with
those organisations, RECITE will apply the Constructive
Evaluation method to their IT systems. Based on the experience
with the case studies, the method will be refined. It will
then be documented in a Method Handbook giving detailed
instructions on using the method in various contexts and
including all five case studies. Once it has been demonstrated
and refined through the five case studies, and fully documented
in the Method Handbook, the Constructive Evaluation method
will be of benefit to any organisation aiming to fully exploit
the potential of IT. The overall objective of Constructive
Evaluation is to provide a full and accurate picture of
the impact of an IT system on all stakeholders at all levels,
whether inside the organisation or outside. By delivering
this capability, the method will support organisations of
all sizes in making key decisions and hence in realising
the full potential of Information Technology.
VAMP - Voice
Adapted Multipurpose Peripherals
The project aims to
introduce new voice facilities into existing products/processes
and to disseminate, with a uniform approach, the best practice
and advantages obtained through the undertaken innovations.
The main objectives of the project are: 1. To use selected
microelectronic technologies in Best-Practice experiments
to introduce new voice interface into a set of the users
organizations portfolios with the purpose of increasing
the commercial value of the products and to stimulate new
market opportunities. 2. To effectively monitor the experiments,
provide assistance in the execution of the experiment and
to capture of the experiences and the best practices adopted
during the development cycle. 3. To bring together the contributions
of users and expertise centres to develop a common dissemination
plan able to reflect the uniform telematic actions (i.e.
the introduction of new voice facilities) and to present
the results of all the experiments with the same strategies
and promotion tools. 4. To encourage the wider use of voice
adapted peripherals by addressing several different industrial
sectors in the planned experiments, while facilitating the
replication of the adopted best practice methodologies to
other well identified business communities.
WONDERMAR -
Wide Open Network for Development & Research in the Maritime
Industry
WONDER MAR is a user
group in the maritime sector. It is a "wide-open" working
group co-ordinating the activity of existing projects and
actively seeking new partners, sharing both in the existing
results and in the development of new knowledge that would
be of invaluable benefit to the industry as a whole. Based
on the experience and results of the project MARVELOUS (Maritime
Virtual Enterprise Linkage - Open User Syndicate) WONDER
MAR is concerned with improving the systematic exchange
of information and forging links between teams working around
a common RTD theme. The RTD themes mainly comprise the use
of advanced IT and CT in manufacturing and engineering across
the maritime industry. WONDER MAR ensures that existing
and future maritime IT projects have at their disposal a
forum for the exchange of views, the sharing of experiences
and the formulation of common approaches. At the same time
WONDER MAR ensures the representation of such views at existing
international forums. Finally, WONDER MAR helps to disseminate
the results of the individual projects and further the wide-open
nature of the undertaking. New participants are sought actively
and innovation is promoted aggressively.

Y-NET -
Y-Net Pilot OSI Network Service / Greek NOU
Y-Net has been an initiative
of the European Commission and major European IT manufacturers
since 1991, aiming at establishing a European-wide telematic
network based on OSI (X.400), as well as promoting the use
of OSI services, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs). Participants in CEC funded RTD Programmes from both
industry and academia, have formed the pilot users group.
A number of National Operation Units (NOUs) responsible
for the operation of the Y-Net OSI nodes and direct end
user support at national level has been set up in most EU
countries. ARCHIMEDIA S.A. has undertaken the operation
of the Greek NOU (technical administration and management),
as well as user support, monitoring and evaluation, marketing
and dissemination activities in Greece.
Y-Net Expansion
- Expansion of Y-NET in Rumania, Bulgaria and Albania
ARCHIMEDIA has been
involved in the execution of three separate studies for
the expansion of OSI services offered by the Y-NET network
to Rumania, Bulgaria and Albania. Y-Net has been an initiative
of the European Commission and major European IT manufacturers
since 1991, aiming at establishing a European-wide telematic
network based on OSI (X.400), as well as promoting the use
of OSI services, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs).

A Java based flora
database application developed for the Biology department
of a Greek University. The application provides capabilities
to record botanic, geographical, and imaging information,
to import/export data in various formats and finally to
generate comprehensive reports based on the recorded information.

Y2K porting of the human resources management systems for
Greek Public Electricity Company (DEH)
ARCHIMEDIA S.A. performed
the system transition of the accounting, personnel payment,
human resources management and personnel insurance systems
for the Greek Public Electricity Company (DEH). During this
projects all the COBOL source code modified to a newer version
(Microfocus COBOL) to remove Y2K dependecies. During this
project, all the database infrastructure changed from the
old style Network/Hierarhical Database to Relational Database,
specifically Oracle RDMS.

Multicast over Geostationary EHF Satellites
The GEOCAST project
purpose is to come up to a better definition of multicast
satellite systems. It encompasses segments (terminals, gateways
and satellites) as well as ISO layers (radio, access, network
and services) definition in order to match the needs of
multicast systems. The objectives are then to define next
generation multicast satellite systems, demonstrate their
feasibility and optimise their performance thanks to an
emulator, realisation and validate their performance thanks
to live experiments, which can only bring the best practise
experience necessary for a wide adoption by operators. ARCHIMEDIA
S.A. is involved with the network management of the GEOCAST
network as well as the definition of a set of multicast
applications that could be effectively realised by a multicast
satellite network.
FRESH -
A Food industry RE-engineering pilot to achieve Supply cHain
integration
FRESH aims at re-engineering
the supply chain of the Pilot end-user Parmalat and at providing
organizational models and IT solutions, which will enable
to replicate the Pilot experiment in the Food Sectors, in
the context of both large enterprises and SMEs. One method
that has come into prominence in recent years is Supply
Chain Management. By integrating material management throughout
the supply chain, from raw material suppliers to customer
delivery, companies can significantly reduce lead-times
and increase flexibility. The integration includes suppliers,
sub-contract suppliers, in-house production processes, shipping,
transportation, distribution warehouses, and closes the
loop with the end customer. The main activities will be:

Hypermedia Applications for Tourism
The project provides
a hypermedia platform combining an organisational framework
and a methodology for the exploitation and promotion of
tourism in Europe of 2000. The principal aim is to develop
a business-centred approach for the production of multimedia
applications promoting tourism. The key point is that the
organisational structure will be planned in such a way as
to enable the applications to be self-financing. The overall
objectives are: - To set up six pilot sites which will address
the business and technical aspects of producing and distributing
multimedia applications for the promotion of tourism. -
To define an organisational and business methodology by
which organisations in the tourism industry and other related
organisations can establish a business association and provide
the funds for the development of multimedia applications

ODISSEIA -
Operational Development Integrated Strategic Scheme of Employment
In Attica
A project on innovative
measures financed under Art. 6 of the European Social Fund
Regulation, "Local employment strategies and innovation".
The work in ODISSEIA aims to elaborate an integrated local
employment strategy in the framework of the Greek National
Action Plan on Employment (NAP), maximise its impact at
the regional level and create new structures for expanding
the breadth of employment opportunities. The coordinator
is the Region of Attica and the partners include major municipalities
and prefectures in Attica. The role of Archimedia comprises
the analysis of the current situation, monitoring, benchmarking,
evaluation of labour market development models, networking
and focused dissemination of project results, as well as
the provision of software applications pertaining to the
management of the project task. These include the project's
web site and intranet portal. Both are database-driven dynamic
applications with emphasis on easy administration and customisation.
Web pages are component-based making extending the existing
feature-rich basis and easy task. Both the intranet portal
and the web site are based on PHP, a popular and portable
web technology. The database backend is based on MySql.
Consequently, both web systems are vendor and platform independent.

WS-Talk -
Web services communicating in the language of their user community
The Web Service (WS)-Talk
interface Layer is a structured natural language interface
for the inter-service communication that extends service
virtualisation to strengthen consumer self-service. The
WS-Talk service then consists of a transport layer representing
a typical web service interface and a context layer resorting
to WS-Talk features for capturing the enterprise talk. The
WS-Talk Layer enables service consumers and providers to
design and implement ad-hoc new services or fine-tune existing
ones. The resulting wrapper, WS-Talk, helps to establish
interoperable web services across platforms.ARMD will develop
the WS-Talk Interpreter. The scientific and prototypical
groundwork for this tool comes from FORTH-ICS. The platform
will be tested in a number of evaluation circles addressing
both internal and external users (i.e. SME proposers and
external software companies).

Analysis of the Distribution of Goods and Services on Scattered
Sites in Greece
This study concerns
the investigation and analysis of the distribution chains
of goods and services in Greece, with emphasis being placed
on the intricacies of large-scale distribution on scattered
sites. It presents an overview of the distribution of goods
and services in Greece and provides an overview of the world-wide
trends and state-of the art concerning distribution business
processes as well as information technologies that can be
used to enable re-engineered distribution processes. An
overall IT framework for distribution is presented, comprising
two major axes: IT integration with the distribution process
and key application systems in distribution. Finally, conclusions
and recommendations, including a proposal for specific actions
to be taken up, are also presented.
EDIFLOW -
Development of EDIFLOW
CLIENT
The Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg
("Eurostat") is a Directorate-General of the European Commission.
Its mission is to provide the European Union with a high
quality statistical information service. Together with the
national statistical services, Eurostat is responsible for
the system of Community statistics (Council Regulation EC
N° 322/97 of 17 February 1997). Eurostat implements standards,
methods and classifications for the production of comparable,
reliable and relevant data. Users of Eurostat’s output include
the Commission and other institutions of the European Union,
national governments of the Member States, international
organisations, businesspersons, universities and a wide
range of other users. Eurostat also supports non-member
countries, including those of Central and Eastern Europe
(CEEC), in adapting their statistical systems.
OBJECTIVES
EDIFLOW is a repository of the statistical data flows received
regularly by Eurostat. The project intends to enhance, within
three annual phases, the central repository of the data
flows together with the associated access services via Web
interface. Related international and European agreements
and legislation must be taken into consideration during
this process. The expected benefits include increased efficiency
in data delivery and exploitation, reduced user error, faster
detection of missing data and better realisation of EDIFLOW
as a common repository for Eurostat and its national partners,
containing all necessary information for every party involved.
SOLUTION
The team of ArchiMedia’s experts is skilled in working with
very large databases and Internet and Web technologies such
as Oracle, ColdFusion, Java and others necessary to implement
the extensive revisions to the EDIFLOW database schema and
user interface. The team also has a deep knowledge of statistics
and ample experience working in a multinational, multilingual
environment. ArchiMedia will design and develop a more efficient
database schema and user interface for EDIFLOW, enriched
with profiling, reporting, interconnecting, monitoring and
special services capabilities.
ASP-NET -
Application Service Providers Network
The project investigated
the technical and financial viability of transforming software
from a product into a product-service system. This encompassed
transferring three critical business applications to the
ASP (Application Service Provider, and Web Services) model,
namely e-messaging, enterprise project management and human
resource management. The ASP-NET partners designed and developed
a core platform to distribute the applications, ensuring
integration, interoperability and a high level of service
while accounting for billing, mobile access and security
issues. The results were tested and evaluated in two business
sectors: Information Technology (IT) and Airport Operations
(at the new Athens International Airport).

VERITAS -
Virtual Enterprises for Integrated Industrial Solutions
VERITAS project overall
objective is to increase the dynamics of European Industrial
Enterprises by transforming them, where appropriate and
possible, to more flexible and re-active companies that
use the Virtual Enterprise concept in a manageable and effective
way. The ambitious goal is to help manufacturing companies
with high production-related costs to understand and implement
the concept of virtual enterprise, enabled through smart
organisation and process restructuring and supported by
the use of Information Technology, cross-organisation Work
Management solutions in particular.VERITAS' concrete and
verifiable objective will be the permanent creation of three
stable networks. VERITAS will not force a VE initiative
within its time horizon, but will provide all the necessary
prerequisites and knowledge to form a VE in the future.
This includes comprehensive training in configuration, co-operation
and competence management for VE as well as the development
of tools to monitor and manage VEs.
BROOM -
Banking Process Re-engineering Through Object-Oriented Modelling
The overall objective
of the BROOM project is to investigate the potential of
redesigning core banking processes, using object-oriented
(OO) business modelling techniques and tools. The OO banking
business process model and the associated techniques and
tools, could also prove to be a significant first design
step in the development of future banking information systems.
The BROOM project will concentrate on the banking processes
that take place in the bank's branches and will aim in using
object-oriented models and techniques in order to re-engineer
these processes.
CEBOS -
Cost Effective e-Business Operating Services
CEBOS is a Best Practice
Pilot project, partially funded by the European Commission
under the IST program (Information Society Technologies).
It will cover a period of eighteen months commencing on
the 1st of July 2001. Its main objective is the establishment
and evaluation of four Electronic Marketplaces in Greece,
Spain, United Kingdom and Romania, which will progressively
minimize the gap between SMEs and the International on line
market. By deploying international standards, CEBOS enables
the formation of regional digital communities as well as
their interconnection in the context of e-Europe. An SME
that becomes user of a regional CEBOS market place, exploits
the opportunity for concentrated marketing activities and
becomes a part of a wider network of digital market places
with global impact.

ENLARGE is a European
project that addresses the IST Action line II.1.5 by promoting
broad adoption of eCommerce and eWork in regional and sectoral
settings of Eastern Europe and Balkan countries. ENLARGE
